My View
Music Industry 2005
When I wrote "My View 2004" many people felt I was being cynical about the music industry.
That while I was speaking from experience, I was also not giving enough credit to the changes that
were taking place. The point I was trying to make was that with so many technological changes happening
many top executives were slow to move forward from either lack of knowledge or a fear of being obsolete.
In any successful business, changes and attitude start at the top, they have to be clear and concise with an
agenda that everyone understands and believes in and I felt most record companies did not come close.
I felt then and I still do today that the music industry and for that matter the entertainment industry
is in for a radical change and by radical I don't mean the religious right getting their way,
(which probably will happen). What I'm saying is the quality in digital products for recording music
and film and software for presentation and distribution is becoming exceptional. Factor in the ease of use
while at the same time the cost for said product is going down and you have an army of entrepreneurs making
waves like never before. You need not look any further than what has been happening with independent films
and the Oscar buzz. Factor in that off shore sites from Russia and China to name a few are selling music
cheaper and cheaper that it will be a matter of time when music will be given away as a promotion tool.
That TIVO and other companies will be downloading movies very soon to your home entertainment computer
and you have a wide open opportunity for independent artists and film makers to control the business
landscape.
As I said the industry is and will continue to change, but I think the changes will be forced by independent
artist whom feel they don't need the major players like they once did. The fact that on line sales for the past
2004 holiday were at record numbers and you understand that the playing field is leveling out. That indies
use the net to sell and distribute product.
Only time will tell, but I'll bet as technology advances and clever and talented entrepreneurs take advantage you
will see some major changes moving forward.
All the best JJ
